Evaluation Questions (Re Written)

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Since the start of my Media Course, I have been learnt about the processes of constructing several types of media produce. Through the preliminary exercise through to our final cut, I have gained confidence in using professional equipment and software such as dollies for tracking and Abode After Effects CS5.5 for our tittles.

When my group and I began filming process, like the majority of the students in our class we used the compact cameras. After uploading our first piece of footage we found that the quality of our footage was quite poor, I suggested to my group that we used the SLR cameras provided in our school for use in the photography department instead of the compact camera. These allowed us to have more control over elements such as the focus and exposure therefore allowing us to be able to control lighting and colour tints.

This created new obstacle which I had to overcome during filming, I had to learn how to make the footage I captured look professional. At first I struggled with the SLR cameras and found it difficult to control the focus when panning and tracking characters, especially when trying to show a shallow depth of field. However, as I became more experienced with using them I managed to overcome this problem and acquired a new skill.

I also found the benefits of using a tripod to steady the camera and found it they made it a lot easier when trying to create a smooth and professional looking pan. I found it relatively easy to gauge and maintain a steady speed when panning with the aid of a tripod; this improved the quality of our film by a significant amount.

Another advantage of having access to professional equipment was being able to use a dolly. This piece of equipment enabled me to capture smooth tracking shots therefore making our final outcome feel a lot more authentic.

On the other hand, there were some issues which my group and I had to overcome, for example; we found that we had to change some of our entail ideas in rearguards to camera movements. In the shot where we see the characters 'Peaches' and 'Chardonnay' are walking down towards the school, we originally thought it best to use a dolly and track the actors feet as they walked. After carrying out a test shoot, we found that this did not work as well as we had hoped as the rough and bumpy surface of the ground made it impossible to achieve a smooth motion.

Here is evidence of how I experimented with using a digital camera in the early stages of production:

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Looking back to the earlier in the year when I completed my preliminary task, I feel I have progressed in my ability to direct and set up shots without getting items such as tripods in the view of the shot, I have learnt to be more aware of my surroundings when filming. We filmed our preliminary task using a digital camera but being able to film our final product using a SLR camera meant we were able to create a out come which looked more professional. I have also learnt to importance of planning before going on location. Before shooting my preliminary task, my team and I did not spend enough time planning and story bearding. I have learnt the importance of group communication through the production of our product on different levels this was our production team because are one of the larger groups. Through out this task our group felt it was important to keep group members up-to-date with the development of ideas we did this mainly through Facebook. There was not enough communication between participles in the creating of our preliminary task.

I have also learnt a great deal about title sequences and editing in Adobe After Affects. This is were I created the opening title sequence for our opening which is something I had never done before. It was interesting to see how technical the processes of using the animation soft wear was and I have learnt a completely new skill in the production of our final product.

Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Shot Types.
The shot types selected are often designed in order for the audience to follow the narrative of the film through the eyes of the main characters. Typical chick flick shot types includes two shots to show personal relationships between characters, close ups to show feelings and portrayed by the actors and a rage of establishing shots.  Low angle shots are used to make the characters appear strong and powerful.  We aimed to uses as many of these shot types as possible in order to make the genre of our film opening clear.

This shot was filmed so that the back ground was in clear focus in order for the setting to be established (in front of school gates). This goes against the forms of our chosen genre as you would expect the characters to be the main focal point of each shot throughout but in contrast, this does portray the character as rebellious and dangerous.
Her appearance creates juxtaposition with the peaceful back drop.

Evaluation: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My group have chosen Universal  Pictures as our distributor. We have chosen them because Universal Pictures are a very well known American film company who are popular for distributing large budget films. They are also known for they’re influence on British cinema and partnership between Universal Vivendi and Working Title. They have produced box office hits like: 'Bridget Jones’ Dairy‘ and 'Bridesmaids' . We have aimed to achieved this level of quality in the film opening we have created by using the best quality equipment that were available to us with little to no budget.

Final cut- no sound

Evaluation: Who would be the audience for your media product?

The targeted audience for our opening would be girls aged between 12 and 18. I believe as though a more western target audience would find it easier to relate to the characters because of the stereotypes portrayed in the narrative. Because of the different personality traits of each character, girls from various different social backgrounds will feel that they are able to relate to at least one of the characters and this connection in the first two minutes of the film will make them keen to watch on.

Age Rating.
In order to ensure that I am able to excess  all of my audience, I think it would be best if my film would  be a certificate 12. Although there are scenes of implied smoking and some anti-social behaviour therefore I think that our final product should be a 12A making it up the the child's carer weather to let the child watch the film, particularly if they are extremely impressionable.
